Day Master Strength Calculator
Is your Day Master strong or weak? Korean readers ask 신강 or 신약 (singang, sinyak) before almost anything else, because the answer decides which elements help you — your useful elements, 용신 (yongsin). Enter your birth details to see the score, the three classic checks and the reasoning behind it.
What does a strong or weak Day Master mean?
Your Day Master is the stem of your day pillar — the character that stands for you. The other seven characters either support it (your own element and the element that feeds it) or draw on it (the elements you produce, control or are controlled by). A strong Day Master has more support than pressure; a weak one has more pressure than support. It is a balance reading, not a verdict on character: a weak Day Master is not a weak person, just a chart whose energy is pointed outward.
How is Day Master strength calculated here?
We give the seven characters around your Day Master a weight that adds up to 100 and add up the share that supports it. The month branch counts most because it sets the season you were born into. Each branch’s weight is split among its hidden stems — 70% to the main one, the rest to the minor ones — so a branch can partly help and partly press.
| Position | Stem | Branch | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Month | 12 | 30 | The season of birth (득령, deungnyeong) |
| Day | — (you) | 16 | The branch you sit on (득지, deukji) |
| Hour | 10 | 12 | Close to the day pillar |
| Year | 10 | 10 | Farthest from the day pillar |
We also show the three traditional yes-or-no checks that Korean readers use: does the month branch support you (season), does the day branch support you (root), and do at least half of the other main characters support you (company, 득세 deukse)?
Why is a balanced chart around 40, not 50?
Only two of the five element groups support a Day Master — Companion and Resource — while three draw on it. A typical chart therefore scores around 40. When we ran 3,000 random charts through the calculator, the middle chart scored 39. So the bands are centered there: under 20 very weak, 20–33 weak, 33–47 balanced, 47–60 strong and 60 or more very strong, which puts roughly a quarter of charts in each of the middle three bands.
What is a useful element (yongsin)?
The useful element is the one that brings your chart back toward balance. This page uses the most common method, support and suppress (억부, eokbu): a weak Day Master is helped by Resource or Companion, depending on what is draining it most; a strong one is helped by the elements that check or channel it — Wealth, Officer or Output. For a balanced chart we apply the same rule lightly, by which side of the typical score of 40 it falls on. We add the season note (조후, johu) separately: winter charts welcome Fire and summer charts welcome Water.
Is a strong Day Master better than a weak one?
No. Classical texts prize balance, not strength. Strong Day Masters are often read as independent and driven but slow to take advice; weak ones as responsive and cooperative but quick to tire when stretched. Both describe tendencies, and the luck pillars shift the balance from one decade to the next.
Why do Bazi calculators disagree about my Day Master strength?
Because schools weigh charts differently. Some count only the eight visible characters, some weigh hidden stems by the number of days each one rules, and some judge strength by eye. We publish our weights and show every number so you can see exactly why your chart lands where it does.
What are my lucky colors in Bazi?
Lucky colors are a folk custom that follows the useful element: Wood is green, Fire red, Earth yellow and brown, Metal white and gold, Water black and navy. We list them for fun alongside the direction and numbers traditionally linked with each element.
Do I need my birth time to check Day Master strength?
It helps. Without it the hour pillar — 22 of the 100 points — is missing, and we scale the other six characters up to 100. If your score sits near a band edge, the hour pillar could move it either way.
What is a follow chart?
In a few extremely lopsided charts, some schools stop trying to balance the Day Master and read it as going along with the dominant force instead (종격, 從格). Experts disagree about when this applies, so we only add a note for the most extreme charts (scores under 12 or over 72) and show the standard reading.
