In Korea your zodiac animal is your 띠 (tti) — people ask “what tti are you?” to work out each other’s age. Enter your birth date to find yours, with its element and color.

What is my Korean zodiac sign?

The Korean zodiac uses the same twelve animals as the Chinese one — Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig — in the same order. Each year belongs to one animal, and it also carries one of the five elements from the year’s Heavenly Stem, so the full name of a year is element plus animal: 2026 is a Fire Horse year (병오년, 丙午) and 2027 a Fire Goat year (정미년, 丁未).

Does the Korean zodiac year start at Lunar New Year or on February 4?

Both rules are used. In everyday Korean life, your 띠 usually changes at Lunar New Year (설날, Seollal), which falls between late January and late February. In Saju, the year changes at 입춘 (Ipchun, Start of Spring, around February 4), because the pillars follow the solar calendar. If you were born between those two dates, the two rules give different animals — the calculator above shows both and tells you which one your Saju chart uses.

What do the Korean zodiac colors mean, like “black monkey” or “red horse”?

The color comes from the element of the year’s Heavenly Stem: Wood is blue-green, Fire is red, Earth is yellow, Metal is white and Water is black. So 2016 was a red (Fire) Monkey year and 1992 a black (Water) Monkey year. Korean media love these names — 2024 was widely called the year of the “blue dragon” (청룡). See the five elements for what each element means.

Which Korean zodiac animals are compatible?

Traditional matching uses four groups of “three harmonies” (삼합): Rat–Dragon–Monkey, Ox–Snake–Rooster, Tiger–Horse–Dog and Rabbit–Goat–Pig, plus six “harmony” pairs (육합): Rat–Ox, Tiger–Pig, Rabbit–Dog, Dragon–Rooster, Snake–Monkey and Horse–Goat. Opposite animals clash (충), and Korean folk compatibility also watches the six 원진 (wonjin) pairs. For a fuller picture that also compares your Day Masters, use the Saju compatibility check.

What are people born in the Year of the Rat (쥐띠) like?

子 · 쥐띠 (jwi-tti) · Keywords: Resourceful, Quick-witted, Observant

The Rat opens the zodiac, and an old folk story explains why. When the animals raced to greet the Jade Emperor, the clever Rat rode on the Ox's back and hopped off just before the finish line. Korean grandparents still tell this tale with a grin, because it captures the Rat's gift for spotting the shortcut nobody else noticed. In Saju, 子 is the Water branch of deep midnight, the hour when the old day ends and a new one begins.

People born in a Rat year are often described as alert, sociable and quick to read a room. They notice small details, remember names and tend to have a plan B tucked away somewhere. Korean tradition links the Rat with thrift and good household sense, the person who keeps the pantry stocked well before winter arrives. They can seem reserved with strangers, yet among friends they are lively talkers with a sharp, playful sense of humor.

Because the Rat sees many possible paths at once, it can be tempting to keep every door open and commit to none. A useful reflection is where steadiness would serve better than speed. Choosing one project and staying with it after the novelty fades can be surprisingly freeing. Sharing plans earlier, instead of holding them close, also lets others offer the kind of help a Rat usually prefers to give, not receive.

Traditional matches: Ox, Dragon, Monkey. Clash: Horse. Wonjin pair: Goat.

In 2027 (Fire Goat): Rat and Goat form a wonjin pair (원진), often translated as the 'resentment pair.' Chinese texts also list this pair among the six harms (六害). The classic image is two neighbors who keep misreading each other's tone. In a Goat year, Korean readers usually take this as a reminder to slow down in close relationships: ask before assuming, say thanks out loud and give small misunderstandings a day before responding. Many Rats simply use the year to practice patience.

What are people born in the Year of the Ox (소띠) like?

丑 · 소띠 (so-tti) · Keywords: Steady, Diligent, Dependable

In a farming country like old Korea, the ox was far more than livestock. A family's ox plowed the fields, hauled the harvest and was counted among the household's most valued companions, and a hardworking person is still praised as working 'like an ox.' The branch 丑 sits in the coldest stretch of winter, when Earth holds moisture and seeds wait underground for spring. That image of patient, stored strength is at the center of how Saju readers describe the Ox.

Ox-year people are usually seen as calm, methodical and slow to anger. They prefer to finish one field before plowing the next, and they distrust shortcuts. Friends rely on them because they keep their word, often without making a show of it. They may take time to warm up to new ideas, but once persuaded they commit fully. Beneath the reserved surface there is often a dry wit and a deep loyalty to family and long-time friends.

The Ox's patience is a real asset, yet the same trait can turn into stubbornness when circumstances change. A good question to sit with is which habits still serve you and which you keep simply because they are familiar. Letting others see your process, asking for help with heavy loads and celebrating small finishes can make the long road feel lighter and far more shared.

Traditional matches: Rat, Snake, Rooster. Clash: Goat. Wonjin pair: Horse.

In 2027 (Fire Goat): Ox (丑) and Goat (未) sit directly across from each other on the zodiac wheel, a pairing called a clash, or chung (충). Saju readers link a clash year with movement and change: a new routine, a different desk, a shift in how you divide your time. For an Ox who loves stability, the theme to reflect on is flexibility. Instead of bracing against change, ask which small adjustments might refresh a well-worn path, and let curiosity set the pace.

What are people born in the Year of the Tiger (호랑이띠) like?

寅 · 호랑이띠 (horangi-tti) · Keywords: Brave, Protective, Spirited

No animal appears more often in Korean folklore than the tiger. It guards mountain shrines, stars in countless children's tales that open with 'long, long ago, when tigers smoked pipes,' and served as the friendly mascot of the 1988 Seoul Olympics. In Saju, 寅 is the Wood branch of early spring, when sap rises and the first green shoots push through frozen ground. The Tiger carries that same burst of fresh, upward energy into everything it does.

Those born under the Tiger tend to come across as bold, generous and quick to defend anyone being treated unfairly. They like to lead from the front and can light up a room with their enthusiasm. Folk wisdom also notes a restless streak: Tigers grow bored with routine and prefer fresh challenges. Their honesty is refreshing, though occasionally blunt. In Korean folk painting the tiger often wears a comical, friendly face, a reminder that its strength usually comes with warmth.

Tigers move fast, and the reflective question is often about pacing. Which battles truly need your energy, and which can be left alone? Learning to pause before reacting, and to let others finish their thoughts, can turn raw courage into steady leadership. It also helps to notice when independence slides into isolation, since even the boldest tiger in the old tales usually had a companion nearby.

Traditional matches: Horse, Dog, Pig. Clash: Monkey. Wonjin pair: Rooster.

In 2027 (Fire Goat): For Tigers, 2027 is read mainly through the year's Fire. In the five-element cycle Wood feeds Fire, so a Fire year is often described as a time when a Tiger's energy flows outward into expression. Goat years are also linked with gentleness and craft. A Tiger might take this as a cue to channel boldness into something patient: a skill practiced slowly, a mentoring role or a creative project that rewards care over speed.

What are people born in the Year of the Rabbit (토끼띠) like?

卯 · 토끼띠 (tokki-tti) · Keywords: Gentle, Graceful, Perceptive

Koreans grow up hearing that a rabbit lives on the moon, pounding rice cakes beneath a cassia tree. In the classic tale Byeoljubu, a quick-thinking rabbit escapes the Dragon King's undersea palace with nothing but clever words. The branch 卯 belongs to Wood at mid-spring, when blossoms open and fields turn green. It stands for soft but persistent growth, like a vine that finds its way around obstacles instead of pushing straight through them.

Ask friends about a Rabbit and you will probably hear words like tactful, refined and good at keeping the peace. They sense tension early and smooth it over with a kind word or a well-timed joke. Many have a strong eye for beauty, whether in clothing, a tidy room or a carefully chosen gift. They prefer harmony to confrontation, which can make them seem cautious, yet when cornered they show the same quick thinking that saved the rabbit in the old story.

The Rabbit's wish for harmony is a gift, but it can lead to swallowing opinions that deserve a voice. A useful reflection is where gentle honesty would build more trust than polite silence. Practicing small, clear requests, such as stating a preference at a group outing or declining an extra task, can help a Rabbit feel more at ease. Peace that includes your own view tends to last longer.

Traditional matches: Goat, Dog, Pig. Clash: Rooster. Wonjin pair: Monkey.

In 2027 (Fire Goat): Rabbit belongs to the three harmonies group 亥卯未 (Pig, Rabbit, Goat), a classic Wood alliance in Saju. A Goat year brings one corner of that triangle into the spotlight, so 2027 is often read as a year when cooperation comes easily to Rabbits: a group project, a reunion with old friends, something built together. Korean folk custom also counts 2027 as the last of the Rabbit's three samjae (삼재, 'three hardships') years, called nal-samjae (날삼재) and read as the trouble leaving. Most people today treat it lightly.

What are people born in the Year of the Dragon (용띠) like?

辰 · 용띠 (yong-tti) · Keywords: Ambitious, Charismatic, Visionary

The Dragon is the only mythical creature in the zodiac, and in Korean tradition it is tied to water, rain and good harvests, not fire. A well-known saying about someone who rises from humble beginnings goes, 'A dragon comes out of a small stream' (개천에서 용 난다). In Saju, 辰 is the Earth branch of late spring, a damp soil that stores water and feeds growth. It holds several elements at once, which is part of why the Dragon is seen as versatile.

Most Dragons come across as confident, energetic and drawn to big ideas. They tend to stand out without trying, and others look to them for direction. People admire their vision and their willingness to aim high. They can also set very high standards, for themselves as much as for others. When a Dragon believes in something, the enthusiasm spreads, and many do their best work in roles that let them inspire a team.

Dragons often carry big expectations, and the reflection is usually about balance. What would 'good enough' look like on an ordinary day? Allowing room for mistakes, your own and other people's, can make ambition feel lighter. Listening closely to softer voices also tends to sharpen a Dragon's vision, because the details others notice often complete the picture you are trying to build.

Traditional matches: Rat, Monkey, Rooster. Clash: Dog. Wonjin pair: Pig.

In 2027 (Fire Goat): For Dragons, the interesting detail of 2027 is that 辰 and 未 are both Earth branches, so some readers describe the year as familiar ground: a season for steady building over dramatic leaps. A Dragon might use it to give a grand idea a firm foundation, testing plans in small, practical steps before scaling them up, and inviting a few trusted people to poke holes in the blueprint early.

What are people born in the Year of the Snake (뱀띠) like?

巳 · 뱀띠 (baem-tti) · Keywords: Wise, Composed, Intuitive

In old Korean households the snake was often regarded with respect. Folk belief spoke of eopsin, a guardian spirit of the home that was said to take the form of a snake resting in the storehouse and watching over the family's stores. In Saju, 巳 is the Fire branch of early summer, when the sun climbs high and warmth builds steadily. The Snake carries that same inner heat, controlled and patient, unlike the open blaze of midsummer.

A Snake-born person usually strikes others as thoughtful, elegant and hard to read at first meeting. They prefer to observe before speaking, and when they do speak, their words tend to be precise. Classic zodiac lore credits them with strong intuition and a talent for strategy. They value privacy and a few deep friendships over a wide circle. Many enjoy subjects that reward careful thought, from philosophy to design, and they rarely rush an important decision.

The Snake's caution protects it, but it can also keep good ideas hidden for too long. A helpful reflection is when sharing a half-finished thought might invite useful input. Letting people see your warmth, not only your competence, deepens the trust you already earn. It can also help to notice when careful planning has slowly turned into waiting for a perfect moment that never needed to arrive.

Traditional matches: Ox, Monkey, Rooster. Clash: Pig. Wonjin pair: Dog.

In 2027 (Fire Goat): For Snakes, the Goat year feels like visiting a neighbor. 巳, 午 and 未 together make up the summer family of branches, so the Snake sits right next door to the Goat in that seasonal group. Readers often describe the Fire Goat year as a familiar, warm climate for a Snake. A fitting theme is to let that warmth show: share your expertise, mentor someone or bring a private project out into public view.

What are people born in the Year of the Horse (말띠) like?

午 · 말띠 (mal-tti) · Keywords: Energetic, Free-spirited, Warm

The horse runs all through Korean history, from the white horse that appears in the founding legend of the Silla kingdom to the flying horse painted on a saddle flap found in the Cheonmachong tomb in Gyeongju. Its branch 午 belongs to Fire at the height of summer and to noon, the brightest hour of the day. It represents energy at its peak: open, visible and moving. That sunlit image shapes how readers describe people born in a Horse year.

Horse-year people are often described as lively, expressive and happiest when there is room to roam. They make friends easily and bring a cheerful, sociable spirit to any gathering. Above all, Horses love freedom: they dislike being fenced in by too many rules and often do their best work when given a goal and left to choose the route. Their enthusiasm starts strong and thrives on variety, so a changing landscape keeps them engaged.

The Horse's love of freedom is part of its charm, and the reflective question is how to pair it with follow-through. Which commitments are worth keeping even after the first excitement fades? Building small routines that still leave space to roam can help. It is also worth noticing when quick decisions skip over other people's input, since a little patience often makes a shared ride much smoother.

Traditional matches: Tiger, Goat, Dog. Clash: Rat. Wonjin pair: Ox.

In 2027 (Fire Goat): Horse (午) and Goat (未) form one of the six harmonies, a pairing traditionally compared to two friends who naturally fall into step. In a Goat year, readers often describe the atmosphere as friendly and cooperative for a Horse. Partnerships, teamwork and close friendships make natural themes, as does finishing what you start with someone beside you. It is also a pleasant year to say yes when a friend proposes a shared plan.

What are people born in the Year of the Goat (양띠) like?

未 · 양띠 (yang-tti) · Keywords: Kind, Creative, Calm

In Korean the zodiac sign 未 is called yang (양), a word that covers both sheep and goats, which is why English guides use either name. The animal has long stood for gentleness and harmony; in old paintings, flocks graze peacefully near scholars' retreats. On the Saju calendar, 未 marks the Earth of late summer: warm soil heavy with ripening crops just before the harvest. It holds the heat of Fire and the patience of Earth together in one sign.

Gentle, artistic and deeply considerate: that is the classic portrait of someone born in a Goat year. They notice when someone feels left out and make room for them without fuss. Many have a gift for crafts, music, gardening or design, anything where care and taste shape the result. Goats tend to prefer calm surroundings and cooperative teams. They may hesitate to push forward on their own, yet in a supportive setting their steady creativity flourishes and often surprises everyone.

The Goat's kindness can lead it to put everyone else first. A good reflection is where your own wishes belong on the list. Practicing small acts of self-advocacy, such as naming a deadline you need or sharing an idea before it feels perfect, lets your creativity reach more people. Trusting your judgment, without waiting for approval, is often the step that turns hidden talent into confidence.

Traditional matches: Rabbit, Horse, Pig. Clash: Ox. Wonjin pair: Rat.

In 2027 (Fire Goat): For Goat-born people, 2027 is their own animal year, known in Chinese as běnmìngnián (本命年); Koreans usually just say it is their own tti year. It is treated as a time for looking inward and taking stock, a bit like a birthday that lasts twelve months. In Korean folk reckoning, 2027 is also the Goat's nal-samjae (날삼재), the last of three samjae (삼재, 'three hardships') years, read as the trouble leaving; many people today treat it lightly. Setting clear intentions for the next cycle fits the mood.

What are people born in the Year of the Monkey (원숭이띠) like?

申 · 원숭이띠 (wonsungi-tti) · Keywords: Clever, Playful, Adaptable

Monkeys were never native to Korea, yet the animal holds a playful place in its imagination. The tomb of the Silla general Kim Yu-sin is ringed with carved zodiac guardians, monkey included, and children still chant a chain rhyme that begins 'a monkey's bottom is red' (원숭이 엉덩이는 빨개). In Saju, 申 is the Metal branch of early autumn, when the air turns crisp and harvest tools come out. It carries a sharp, inventive energy.

Witty, curious and quick to learn, Monkey-born people enjoy puzzles, gadgets and anything that lets them figure out how things work. Zodiac lore praises their problem-solving and their gift for improvisation; when one plan falls through, a Monkey usually has two more ready. They are often the funniest people in the group, and their humor helps others relax. Boredom is their real rival, so variety keeps them at their best.

With so many ideas in motion, a Monkey can jump to the next puzzle before the current one is finished. A useful reflection is which projects deserve your full attention all the way to the end. Slowing down enough to explain your thinking also helps others follow your leaps. And while humor is a gift, it is worth noticing moments when a sincere word would land better than a clever one.

Traditional matches: Rat, Dragon, Snake. Clash: Tiger. Wonjin pair: Rabbit.

In 2027 (Fire Goat): Monkeys meet 2027 the way metal meets a forge: Fire works on Metal and shapes it, and some readers describe a Fire year as a time when a Monkey's sharp skills get refined. A good theme is to choose one talent and polish it: take a course, deepen a craft or bring a long-postponed project to completion. Small, regular practice counts for more than speed here.

What are people born in the Year of the Rooster (닭띠) like?

酉 · 닭띠 (dak-tti) · Keywords: Punctual, Precise, Confident

For centuries, Korean villages woke to the rooster's crow, and the bird became a symbol of a new day and of diligence. In Korean the rooster's comb is called byeot, which sounds like byeoseul, an official post, so folk paintings of a rooster made a hopeful gift for students preparing for state exams. Its branch, 酉, governs Metal in mid-autumn, the season of clear skies and finished harvests, and of the evening hour when work is put in order.

In the old readings, Rooster-year people come across as orderly, honest and attentive to detail. They like a schedule, keep their spaces in order and notice when something is out of place. They are also credited with courage and a strong sense of right and wrong. They speak frankly and expect the same from others. Many take real pride in their appearance and their work, and their high standards often make them the one others ask to check the final draft.

The Rooster's eye for detail is valuable, and the reflection is often about softness. Where might encouragement do more than correction? Noticing what already works before pointing out what does not makes feedback easier to hear. It also helps to allow some mess in early creative stages, since first drafts rarely look neat. Letting others see your humor, not just your standards, makes your reliability feel warm.

Traditional matches: Ox, Dragon, Snake. Clash: Rabbit. Wonjin pair: Tiger.

In 2027 (Fire Goat): For Roosters, the Goat year brings a softer climate. Goat years are associated with gentleness, craft and community, qualities that can balance the Rooster's crisp precision. A Rooster might take the year as a cue to mix standards with warmth: teach more and correct less, join a hobby group, or share work in progress before every detail gleams. What are people born in the Year of the Dog (개띠) like?

戌 · 개띠 (gae-tti) · Keywords: Loyal, Honest, Fair-minded

The dog has been a faithful companion in Korean homes for centuries. The Sapsal, a shaggy native breed whose name is popularly explained as 'chasing away bad spirits,' was once believed to guard households against bad luck, and the Jindo dog is famous for its devotion to a single family. As a Saju branch, 戌 stands for the Earth of late autumn, dry soil after the harvest that holds the last warmth of the year. It carries a strong sense of guardianship.

Sincere, protective and deeply loyal, Dog-year people stand firmly by friends and family. They have a strong sense of fairness and will speak up when they see someone treated badly. Their honesty is practical: Dogs say what they mean and expect clear dealings in return. They can be wary of new people at first, but once trust forms it tends to last for decades. Many find meaning in work that serves a community.

The Dog's protectiveness comes from care, and a worthwhile question is how much of the world's weight you need to carry. Not every problem is yours to fix. Practicing trust in new situations, instead of waiting for proof, can open doors to fresh friendships and lighten the load you carry for others. Play and rest belong on a loyal Dog's schedule too.

Traditional matches: Tiger, Rabbit, Horse. Clash: Dragon. Wonjin pair: Snake.

In 2027 (Fire Goat): Dog and Goat form neither a harmony nor a clash, so readers look instead at the character of the Goat year itself. The Goat is traditionally the zodiac's gentle artist, and its year is often linked with creativity, hospitality and kindness. For a Dog, whose instinct is to guard and serve, the theme to reflect on might be receiving as well as giving: accept invitations, enjoy a creative hobby and let others look after you now and then.

What are people born in the Year of the Pig (돼지띠) like?

亥 · 돼지띠 (dwaeji-tti) · Keywords: Generous, Easygoing, Sincere

In Korea the pig is a cheerful symbol of plenty and good fortune. Dreaming of a pig is the classic Korean 'lucky dream' (돼지꿈), and smiling pig figurines are popular gifts for a new home or a newly opened shop. Its branch, 亥, marks the Water of early winter, a restful time when the year's work is done and families gather indoors. It carries an image of rest, warmth and abundance shared with the people around you.

Kindness, honesty and generosity with time are the qualities most often linked to the Pig. They enjoy good company, long conversations and simple pleasures, and they rarely hold grudges. Traditional readers praise their sincerity: Pigs say what they feel and assume the best of others. They work hard when a goal matters to them and then relax completely. Their easygoing warmth makes them natural hosts, and friends often remember a Pig's home as the place where everyone felt welcome.

The Pig's trust in people is a lovely quality, though it can leave a generous Pig stretched thin. The usual lesson is boundaries: learn to say 'not this time' without guilt. It also helps to plan ahead for goals you care about, so easygoing days sit alongside clear progress. A Pig who keeps some warmth in reserve tends to have even more to share with friends over the long run.

Traditional matches: Tiger, Rabbit, Goat. Clash: Snake. Wonjin pair: Dragon.

In 2027 (Fire Goat): Together with the Rabbit and the Goat, the Pig forms the three harmonies trio 亥卯未, a Wood alliance. As the Water branch that opens the trio, the Pig is often described as its root, nourishing the growth the other two display, so a Goat year is read as a supportive time for community and fresh learning. Korean folk custom also marks 2027 as the Pig's final samjae (삼재, 'three hardships') year, nal-samjae (날삼재), the trouble leaving; most people take it lightly.

How do I find my Korean zodiac animal?

Take your birth year and check whether you were born before Lunar New Year (everyday Korean rule) or before February 4 (Saju rule) — if so, you belong to the previous year’s animal. The calculator on this page does both automatically.

What animal is 2026 and 2027 in the Korean zodiac?

2026 is the year of the Horse — a red Fire Horse, 병오 (丙午). 2027 is the year of the Goat (sometimes called Sheep) — a red Fire Goat, 정미 (丁未). In Saju each starts around February 4. See the 2027 forecast.

Is the Korean zodiac different from the Chinese zodiac?

The animals, order and elements are the same. The differences are cultural: Koreans ask about 띠 to place each other’s age, the Goat is usually called 양 (sheep/goat), and folk matching gives extra weight to the 원진 pairs.

Is my zodiac animal the most important part of my Saju?

No. The animal comes from your year branch, one of eight characters. Saju readings start from the Day Master — the stem of your day of birth. Find it on the Day Master page.
