The 60 Day Pillars
Your day pillar — 일주 (ilju) in Korean — is the pair of characters for the day you were born: your Day Master on top and your spouse palace underneath. Enter your birth date to find yours.
What is a day pillar in Saju?
A Saju chart has four pillars, and the day pillar is the one readers look at first. Its stem is your Day Master — the character that stands for you — and its branch is traditionally called the spouse palace (배우자궁), the seat of your closest partnership and private life. Because stems and branches pair up in a fixed cycle, there are exactly sixty day pillars, from 甲子 (Jia Zi, 갑자) to 癸亥 (Gui Hai, 계해).
How is the day pillar different from the Day Master?
The Day Master is only the top character, so six day pillars share each Day Master. Two Yang Wood people — one born on a 甲子 day and one on a 甲午 day — share the same core element, but the branch underneath changes the season they grow in, the hidden stems they carry and how they meet a partner. Korean readers love comparing 일주 for exactly this reason. Read the ten Day Master profiles for the top half.
Which day pillar am I?
Pick yours below — the sixty pillars run in six groups of ten, one group per 旬 (sun, a ten-day “week” of the cycle). Births between about 23:00 and 01:00 can fall on either side of a day boundary, so check those with the full Saju calculator.
What do the twelve stages, Na Yin and void mean?
Each day pillar page lists three classic labels. The twelve stages (십이운성) show where the Day Master stands in a growth cycle — from Birth through Peak to Storehouse and back to Conception — when it sits on that branch. The Na Yin (納音, nabeum) is a poetic element name shared by pairs of pillars, such as “Gold in the Sea” for 甲子 and 乙丑. The void (공망, gongmang) names the two branches left over when ten stems meet twelve branches in each ten-day row. All three come from standard almanac tables, and we check ours against an independent almanac library.
What is my day pillar?
Your day pillar is the stem-and-branch pair of the day you were born, one of sixty. Enter your birth date above to find it; it depends only on the date, except for births close to midnight.
What is ilju (일주) in Korean?
일주 (日柱, “day pillar”) is the Korean word for the day pillar. People often name it directly — “I’m a 갑자 일주” — the way others mention a sun sign.
Which day pillar is the best?
None. Every pillar has its own balance of strengths and blind spots, and the rest of the chart — season, other pillars and luck cycles — matters more than the day pillar alone. Popular rankings of “best” pillars are entertainment, not tradition.
Do I need my birth time to find my day pillar?
Usually not. The day pillar follows the calendar day, so a date is enough unless you were born between about 23:00 and 01:00 local solar time, when the exact time and place decide which day you belong to.
